Professor Qu Yan

Professor, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts | Director, Institute of Urban-Rural Art Construction

Qu Yan is a contemporary artist, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA), as well as Director of the Institute of Urban-Rural Art Construction, GAFA. He serves as a member of the Expert Committee for the UNESCO Chair on Rural Cultural Creativity and Sustainable Development.

As one of the earliest initiators and representative figures of the “New Wave of Artistic Rural Construction” in contemporary China, his monographs include “Spirit Elsewhere”, “Artistic Rural Construction: Revelations of Xucun’s Regeneration”, “Artistic Vision: Qu Yan’s Cultural Stance and Social Expression”, “The Gaze at the Boundary”, “The Qingtian Model: A Civilizational Path for China’s Rural Revival”, and “Theory of Artistic Rural Construction: A Renaissance Rooted in Homeland Reconstruction.”

Organisation Description

The Institute of Urban-Rural Art Construction at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts was officially inaugurated on 31 May 2024, with Professor Qu Yan serving as its inaugural Director.

In active response to national policies concerning rural revitalization and integrated urban-rural development, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts established the Institute to leverage the unique role of art in rural development.

As a research institution affiliated to Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, the Institute dedicates itself to research, teaching and practice in the field of artistic rural construction. Furthermore, the Institute takes the lead in establishing the National University Alliance for Art-Based Rural Construction. As a key component of the Bay Area Art Innovation System of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, it is the first core academic platform among China’s fine arts institutions committed to theoretical construction of artistic rural construction, interdisciplinary fieldwork and talent cultivation.
