Mark Louie L. Lugue

Assistant Professor, Department of Art Studies, University of the Philippines Diliman

Mark Louie L. Lugue teaches art histories and arts management at the Department of Art Studies, University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD). He served as Curator of the Bulwagan ng Dangal University Heritage Museum (2023-2025) and as Program Development Associate for university collections at the UPD Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (2020-2025).

His academic scholarship and cultural work practice revolve around collections research, heritage studies, and the entanglements of modernities with the visual arts.

Organisation Description

The University of the Philippines Department of Art Studies has been a leading institution in the teaching and study of art in the country from an inter-disciplinal perspective, drawing primarily from the fields of art history, art theory and aesthetics, art criticism, art management and curatorial studies.

Its current and former faculty boasts of distinguished art historians and art critics, as well as art practitioners in the various fields (theater, dance, music, visual arts, among others) and curators, reflecting the department’s strong interdisciplinal leaning and belief in research grounded in praxis and vice versa.

Since its beginnings in 1959, the department has produced a substantial body of scholarly work that has expanded the domain of Philippine art scholarship beyond the confines of formalist and Euro-American-centric perspectives. It continues to shape new generations of critical art scholars, critics, curators, cultural workers, educators, and artists.
