Larry Engel is a Daytime Emmy® award-winning filmmaker now in his fifth decade of filmmaking that spans all seven continents. He’s worked on nearly 300 projects for domestic and international broadcasters and cable channels, as well many nonprofits.
Currently, Engel is a professor in and the director of the Film and Media Arts division in the School of Communication at American University. The division is a member of the Green Film School Alliance. He co-authored the first “Code of Best Practices in Sustainable Filmmaking” in 2009 and is currently an associate director of the Center for Environmental Filmmaking where he directs the Classroom in the Wild experiential program. Engel also is the inaugural chair of CILECT’s (the premiere international film school association) Standing Committee on Sustainability.
In pursuit of environmental, wildlife, and adventure stories, Engel has flown into hurricanes, been chased by tornadoes, and dropped into ice caves. He’s also descended into acid caves, fled wildfires, gotten lost in jungles, and overheated in Antarctica. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses that range from theory to production.
