Professor Thomas Chung

Professor of School of Architecture, Founding Director of Centre for Sustainable Placemaking and Urban-rural Regeneration, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Thomas Chung is professor at the School of Architecture and founding director of the Centre for Sustainable Placemaking and Urban-rural Regeneration (SPUR), The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was Chair of the Organizing Committee of the International Conference on Rural Revitalization 2023 and 2025. A graduate of the University of Cambridge, his research on urban-rural regeneration since 2019 has been driven by regenerative design, interdisciplinary action research and co-creation principles.

Projects such as the “Project Plum Grove” have received widespread local and international recognition, including the “Research Project of the Year Award” at the Times Higher Education Awards Asia 2025. He leads a multidisciplinary team dedicated to advancing sustainable urban-rural futures.

Organisation Description

The Research Centre for Sustainable Placemaking and Urban-rural Regeneration (SPUR) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is dedicated to interdisciplinary action research on urban-rural symbiosis and sustainable placemaking. Housed under Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability (IEES) and supported by the Faculty of Social Science (SSF), SPUR examines dynamic relationships between urban and rural landscapes to consolidate potential pathways towards sustainable development.

SPUR works in collaboration with governmental and non-governmental organisations, professionals and various community stakeholders to engender place-based urban-rural regeneration.
